An old-unrelated image showing a 55-year-old farmer lying dead on the ground from Bathinda, Punjab is doing rounds on social media falsely linking it to the ongoing farmers' protest.
Several netizens have been sharing images of aircraft crashes and mishaps and claiming it to be the Indonesian plane crash. After verifying these social media claims, we have found most of the images shared as misleading
Here are some posts which shared supposed visuals of the Indonesian plane which had recently crashed. The Silchar Diary writes on Facebook,
"Inna lillahi wainna ilahi Raujun
Indonesian plane has Crushed a few minutes after taking off from the airport.
What happened to the aircraft?
The Sriwijaya Air passenger plane departed from Jakarta airport at 14:36 local time (07:36 GMT) on Saturday.
Minutes later, at 14:40, the last contact with the plane was recorded, with the call sign SJY182, according to the transport ministry.
The usual flight time to Pontianak, in West Kalimantan province in the west of the island of Borneo, is 90 minutes.
The aircraft did not send a distress signal, according to the head of national search and rescue agency Air Marshal Bagus Puruhito.
It is thought to have dropped more than 3,000m (10,000ft) in less than a minute, according to flight tracking websiteFlightradar24.com.
Witnesses said they had seen and heard at least one explosion."
Another page "The Kangleipak" shared the image with a similar description.
In order to verify if the images are actually from the crash, we conducted a reverse image search on each of the images shared. Here is the first image.
Following a reverse image search, we found several news websites reporting a plane crash along with this picture from two years ago. According to reports, a plane had crashed in the waters of Pacific Lagoon in Micronesia after trying to land. Therefore, this image is more than two years old and has nothing to do with the recent Indonesian plane crash.
The reverse image search of the second picture leads us to articles about a plane crash that took place on June 8, 2009.
According to reports, Air France Flight 447 which took off from Rio De Janeiro crashed into the ocean leading to the tragic death of all 228 people on board. Therefore, even this image is outdated and has nothing to do with the Indonesian plane crash.
The third picture’s reverse image search led us to news reports with the image which reported that the image is of Lion Air jet being rescued by navy divers after it crashed into the Java Sea in October 2018.
Therefore, like the two images above, this image is old and unrelated to the Indonesian plane crash incident as well.
The last image, however, leads us to recent reports about the Indonesian plane crash.
Unlike the last three images, this image is actually related to the recent crash. According to reports, investigations and rescue operations are still underway after signal was detected from the plane that crashed into Java sea.
